Verne Q. Powell and Louis Lot preferred the tubing of a flute to be hard and thin. Carbon fiber certainly fits these requirements.
I make carbon fiber headjoints for both C flutes and alto flutes. The choices of lipplates are wood, silver or aluminum. Shown in the picture above are Cocuswood on the alto and aluminum on the C flute. The tenons are silver and the fittings are polished aluminum. These headjoints are lightweight and have a powerful sound. The different lipplate materials work with the carbon fiber tubes to create all shades of colors. The response is naturally fast due to the modest mass the air would need to activate the start of a note. This phenomenon also helps with playing softly, especially in the high register and note endings. The sound just hangs and floats away like smoke with the faintest of air pressure.
